Weird Issue with Microsoft Excel

One of my close friend in Vodafone had a peculiar issue with excel. When he double click on any excel document be it 10 KB to 300 KB, it takes at least 30 seconds to open the files. where as if he drags and drop the file in excel application, it opens within a few seconds. I did check the laptop for some time for spyware/malware indexing issues, created a new file etc etc and could not figure out the reason. Finally, I have unchecked the Dynamic Data exchange in the folder >options > file types> .XLS file and in the open action properties and it resolved the issue.

Office 2007 Ribbon UI

if you love the office 2007 ribbon UI, you can now pep it with Search Commands from Microsoft. I have downloaded it and installed it. The best part is the search results actually does the work instead of guiding me to choose some thing from the ribbon. I find this feature more useful!

Lost Kid in the beach

Every Saturday and Sunday, I make sure I take my kids somewhere out could be beach or play area or open ground. Last week, we went to beach and I noticed a kid 8 years crying and searching her parents. She was playing in the beach and somehow missed them. people who were in the beach suggested me to take it to the police station. She started crying immediately as not to handover to the police. Guess, the parents would have threatened her many times to handed it over to police for all odd issues. I gave her some water and asked to her to sit. I asked her if she knew some telephone number. I realized that she could not speak Tamil and speaks Hindi. All my Mumbai trips Hindi came handy and spoke to her. Whether I spoke to her correctly or not, she understood and gave the number. she gave me a nine digit number and told her to think and give me 10 digits. finally I got the number correct and could not talk for 15 minutes thanks to network coverage and congestion. I somehow managed to speak to that number and asked them to come to the place. She identified her grandfather and asked them to be more careful. I was very happy to see a big grin on her face and it was a indeed a emotional moment for me.

Note : Active diverts

Many of you would be seeing this message when you make a call especially from the Nokia device, despite there are no call forwards or diverts from your number. I came to know its due to voice mail and call waiting service enabled on your SIM by the Telco. if you are sick of seeing this message call up your provider ask them turn off both. The only caveat is you need to call them again if at all if you want to enable it again on your SIM which is very painful.

I don’t see this issue on any of Sony Ericsson devices which I have used so far.

Sony Ericsson W960i

New toy, which I am fiddling around since this morning. For some reason, I am not all comfortable with the Nokia devices, despite working with latest models like Nokia N82. Got this device, this morning at Vodafone Mumbai and I am impressed with the design and the multimedia features. Comes up with 8GB internal memory (note on board memory and not expandable) and 3.2 Mega pixel camera. The audio output quality is incredible both in loud speaker and also via headset. this phone comes with Symbian Operating system with the Standard UIQ wrapper of earlier models. I have quickly setup the exchange server and had issues in configuring it. Later I realized that, there is an issue with our exchange server in OWA and no fault in the device. Emails syncing is too good and has a push facility as well. the email will be pushed as soon as the email fetches the inbox. Very expensive while roaming and sucks big time battery life. The estimated street price is Approx Rs 25,000/- and weighs around 120 gms.

I was upset initially, that i cant enjoy my republic day holiday, thanks to my daughter school function which we both have to attend.

I got up pretty early and attended the flag hoisting followed by school culturals. Post that, there was a fancy dress competition and coloring competition. We were narrowed to M S Subbulakshmi Sania Mirza and Subramania Bharathi and finally MS. Happy to share that she has won the first prize in fancy dress competiion ( she also sung kurai ondrum illai and few words about MS as well) and also in the coloring.

Nokia N 82

I am an avid Sony Ericsson user and have been using the P910i for the last 3 years now. For some reason, the display calibration went for a toss and stylus does not seems to be pointing correctly. I am forced to use the Nokia devices and picked up the Nokia N 82 when was in Vodafone last time. Its a proto device and am using it for the last one week. I am happy with the overall performance of the device.

Couple of points which are very impressive are

Battery life is very good. charge once in 3 days
Email syncing is pretty fast and had some issue in configuring the host address of my server. finally cracked it and frequently checking my emails on the device.
Keypad is very good and its easier to compose SMS and emails.
Camera quality is amazing and have even printed certain images. processing of image is pretty fast.
has got a standard stereo jack on top for listening to music.
Configuring WLAN is pretty straight forward
Loaded with 128 MB memory only :(
Easier identification of the application that are running in the background. shows a circle at the top of applications icon.
Overall, its definitely worth it when comparing with other N series devices

MotoQ : Disappointed

I have been using the MotoQ for the last 10 days and its very disapppointing.

people at the other end gets frequent voice breaking despite having good signal strength. need to move to various sides and have to keep the phone in certain fashion for the other side to hear what i am saying !!.
calls are getting cut within few rings. I expect the phone to ring for few seconds.never had this issue with my Sony Ericsson P 910i.
Browsing is Pathetic. I have noticed that after opening few sites if you leave the device for few minutes and then if you try to resume the browsing for some reason, it says locating and then shows the error message. Looks like, its not able to continue with the same session. I could not find the disconnect option which was very useful in PocketPC edition.
One good thing which i have noticed in Windows Mobile 5.0 and above devices is the Internet Sharing utility. If you have WMDC on your laptop, ( WMDC has the network drrivers for the MotoQ modem) click on the internet sharing icon and choose the connectivity ( bluetooth or USB) and then say connect. you can now start browsing from the laptop
